The 23-foot Airstream International hitched to the Rivian R1T at Coachella, California

Charge without unhitching the trailer

Most DC fast chargers were laid out for cars, not a 50-foot truck-and-trailer combo. A little planning keeps you from unhitching in a parking lot or blocking three stalls to reach one.

Pick stalls you can reach hitched

  • Scout the layout first PlugShare photos and comments tell you which sites have pull-through lanes or end stalls with room for a trailer. Aim for those, and check that the cable reaches your charge port from a position you can actually pull into.
  • Be a good neighbor If the only way to charge is to take more than one stall, do it at off-peak times, leave a note, and move the moment you hit 80 percent. Towing rigs get a bad name fast when they camp on a busy charger.

Carry the adapter

  • Open up the Tesla network A NACS adapter unlocks the huge Tesla Supercharger network, which when you are towing mostly means many more sites in range to choose from. Plenty of Superchargers are still tight pull-in stalls that are awkward with a trailer, so scout each one, but the sheer number of added options makes the adapter the single best accessory for an EV towing road trip.
