Our take

Staging and shakedown base 63 mi up I-8 from home. Cool mountain air at 3,300 ft, clean 50-amp sites, and enough room that a caravan could stage together. A solid, unfussy launch pad, the kind of place you leave the rig charging and sleep easy before the real driving starts.

Our take

A functional Route 66 overnight at the doorstep of Petrified Forest, easy in and out off I-40. Fine for a one-night stop and a caravan would fit, but it is a parking-lot-style layout with little character, hence the middle-of-the-road score. You stay here for the location, not the ambiance.

Tidy west-side Albuquerque resort with paved pull-throughs that swallow the rig without a fight and a pool for the afternoon heat. Easy on, easy off for the morning push east. Comfortable and group-friendly, a notch above a basic overnight without being a destination in itself.

Our take

A frustrating Panhandle overnight. They told us at check-in not to plug the truck in, no EV charging allowed, so the Rivian sat all night and we paid for a Tesla charge at the Buc-ee's 5 mi south the next morning instead. The lot is bare dirt, the staff are fussy about exactly how you position the rig, and the sewer hookup is placed where a normal hose will not reach. See the heads-up below. Functional in a pinch, not one we would book again or send a group to.

Heads upNo EV charging allowed, they told us at check-in, the moment we pulled in, not to plug the truck in. We ended up paying for a Tesla charge at the Buc-ee's down the road the next morning. It's also all dirt, the rules say stay off the grass but there is no grass, it's dirt everywhere. Staff are very specific about how you position the rig in the spot, yet the sewer hookup sits where you cannot reach it without about a 50-foot hose. Bring a long sewer hose and patience.

Our take

Better than expected once you are inside. The indoor pool, jacuzzi, and sauna were genuinely great, a rare luxury for a one-night I-40 stop, and the quick west-side OKC access set up the Route 66 run to Tulsa nicely. The one thing that drags it down is how many long-term residents (lifers) live on site, it reads more permanent community than traveler park. Still a solid stop at a fair price, and fine for a small group.

Great spot, and a bargain at the price. Awesome staff, a clean, gated, quiet park, and we charged the rig overnight on the 50-amp without a hitch. Five minutes from the Tulsa airport, which made the airport pickup easy. The only thing missing is resort extras like a pool, jacuzzi, or sauna, otherwise it would score even higher. A genuinely good Route 66 base for Tulsa, and fine for a small group.

Our highest-rated stay so far and the multi-night basecamp on Table Rock Lake. Big paved Corps sites among the trees, a swim beach, and a boat ramp, the lake setting alone earns the score. Recommended sites: 56, 57, 65, 68; avoid 13 (tight). Plenty of room for a group, just note it is water + electric only, no sewer hookup at the site.

Our take

Beautiful setting with red rock formations all around, and kept clean. The sites are good, our only nitpick is the gravel pads (we threw a rug down and it was all fine). No laundry and no hot tub, but the St. Vrain running right through camp is the highlight: kids tubing and floating past, benches along the water, and a playground. Great for dog walks, and plenty of room for a group. An easy 8 and a genuinely lovely Rocky Mountain basecamp.

Notes

Perfect location, walking distance to downtown Moab, the Brewery, and food. It's perfect for groups: we like camping with friends that don't have campers, so there's tent camping and cabins for them. The pool time was nice and we walked to the Brewery and had some appetizers. Very relaxing with lots of shade and a table with a cement pad, which is nice. People were so nice, had great conversations, and there were 6 Airstreams total that were also traveling that we didn't know, but talked to a couple of them.

Our take

A family campground, bring the kids and the group. There is so much to do: ATV rentals, bike riding, and you can walk to the stores and restaurants, with shuttles to the resort and the park. Perfect for friends staying in different kinds of camping, all side by side: cabins, hotel rooms, tents, and RV sites, with a Tesla Supercharger nearby. The pool and hot tub look nice but were very busy, so we skipped them and just relaxed under the pines. Rolled in at 1% state of charge and left charged, the location a mile from the park entrance is what you are paying for, and at $75.92 it is fair.

Our take

Pretty location with the Zion rocks right in the background, and close enough to the visitor center that you walk over and catch the shuttle. Walking trails from camp, even a trail to walk your dog, which is rare in national parks. Clean showers and bathrooms, and water to fill the tanks. But the sites have no electricity, water, or sewer; it would be nice to just have power, though you can rough it for one night. Hot, with a lot of wind at night. So easy to catch the shuttle for dinner, and we caught it again at 7 AM for the hike.

Campground FAQ

Camping with an Airstream, answered

How we rate sites, what makes one good for a 23-foot Airstream, and charging the truck overnight.

How do you rate the campgrounds?

A single honest 10-point score per stay, plus what we paid, the hookups, what is nearby, and whether the site actually works for a polished 23-foot Airstream and, when it matters, an Airstream group. The log holds 16 stays at an average of 7.2 out of 10, and it grows as we go.

What makes a campground good for towing an Airstream?

Pull-through or back-in sites long enough for the rig without unhitching, a level pad, 30 or 50-amp hookups within reach, and turning room for a twin-axle 23-footer. We note all of it per site so you can tell a tight overnight from a place you would actually stay a few days.

Do you charge the Rivian at campgrounds?

When we can. A 50-amp full-hookup site doubles as overnight Level 2 charging, enough to top the truck off by morning and skip a DC stop the next day. Several legs on the trip ran entirely on overnight campsite charging with no fast-charging at all.
