Rivian R2 · adventure build

Our Rivian R2: a Launch Green adventure build.

We reserved the Rivian R2 on day one, at the Laguna Beach unveiling, and we are among the first owners invited to order. Ours is an R2 Performance in Launch Green on 20-inch all-terrain wheels, and we are building it for adventure: camping, off-road, and the trails the Airstream rig cannot reach.

Rivian R2 in Launch Green with a hard-shell roof-top tent and 20-inch all-terrain wheels, our overland adventure build

Our R2 overland build: Launch Green, roof-top tent, 20" all-terrain. Real photos when it lands.

Day one, minute one.

We were at the R2 unveiling in Laguna Beach and reserved one the moment reservations opened. Years later, that paid off: we were among the first owners Rivian invited to convert a reservation into a real order. We ordered in June 2026 and drove an R2 at the Rivian space in San Diego. Ours is now in production prep: once it is assigned a VIN we finalize the purchase and schedule delivery, which we expect in the coming weeks.

Not a tow vehicle. An adventure rig.

The R2 will not tow the Airstream. That job stays with our Rivian R1T Tri-Motor Max-Pack, the truck with the measured tow ledger. The R2 is the lighter, more nimble second rig: the one we take when the trailer stays home and we want to get further down the trail.

The plan is an overland build. The factory 20-inch all-terrain setup is the starting point. The R2 only just started deliveries, so its overland aftermarket is wide open, most of these parts do not exist for it yet, but here is where we are headed as they catch up:

  • Hard-shell roof-top tent
  • A modest lift to open up tire and travel room
  • Larger all-terrain tires, working toward 35s as fitment allows
  • Off-road and recovery bumpers
  • Skid plates and underbody protection
  • Recovery gear, traction boards, and trail lighting

We will document each mod as it goes on, with real fitment notes, the same way we log the towing data: real config, real miles, real off-grid camping.

Rivian R2 range, specs, and clearance

The R2 is Rivian's midsize, more attainable electric SUV: smaller and lighter than the R1S, built on the same off-road-minded bones. Here are the public numbers that matter for an adventure build.

R2 trims, Long Range pack (EPA-estimated range)
TrimDrivetrainPower0 to 60RangeFrom
Performance · ours Dual-motor AWD 656 hp 3.6 s up to 330 mi $57,990

Standard Single-motor RWD TBD TBD 275+ mi ~$45,000

Range by wheel

Wheels move the range more than the headline suggests. On the Performance, the street wheel gives the full number; our all-terrain trades about 23 miles for the off-road tire and stance.

Rivian R2 FAQ

The Rivian R2, answered

What it is, when it ships, and how we are building ours.

What is the Rivian R2?

Rivian's midsize electric SUV, a smaller and more attainable sibling to the R1S. Rivian unveiled it in March 2024 at a launch event in Laguna Beach, California, and opened reservations that day. It rides on Rivian's next-generation platform, with deliveries beginning in 2026.

When is the Rivian R2 being delivered?

Rivian opened order invitations to early reservation holders in 2026, with first deliveries following. We were a day-one reservation and among the first invited to order; we converted ours to an order in June 2026 and expect delivery within weeks.

What is the Rivian R2 Performance?

The higher-output, dual-motor AWD variant in the R2 lineup: 656 hp and 0 to 60 in 3.6 seconds. Ours is configured in Launch Green on the 20-inch all-terrain wheels, the setup we wanted for an adventure build rather than a commuter.

What is the Rivian R2's range?

On the Long Range pack the R2 is EPA-rated up to 330 miles on the Performance and Premium and up to 345 miles on the single-motor Standard; a smaller pack delivers 275-plus miles. Wheels matter: the Performance returns 330 miles on the 21-inch all-season street wheel, and our 20-inch all-terrain trades about 23 miles for the off-road tire, landing around 307 miles.

How much ground clearance does the Rivian R2 have?

The R2 has 9.6 inches of ground clearance, with a 23-degree approach angle, 26-degree departure, and 20.6-degree breakover. It is 185.9 inches long on a 115.6-inch wheelbase, about 15 inches shorter and roughly 2,000 pounds lighter than the R1S, part of why it makes the nimbler trail rig.

What are the Rivian R2 trims and prices?

Four trims: Performance (dual-motor AWD, 656 hp, from $57,990), Premium (dual-motor AWD, 500 hp, from $53,990), Standard Long Range (single-motor RWD, 350 hp, from $48,490), and an entry Standard around $45,000 on a smaller pack. Performance leads deliveries, with Premium and Standard following into 2027.

How much can the Rivian R2 tow?

Up to 4,400 pounds with the tow package, enough for a small trailer or utility load. We keep towing our 23-foot Airstream with the Rivian R1T, though; the R2 is the lighter rig for camping and the trail.

Will you tow the Airstream with the R2?

No. Our Rivian R1T Tri-Motor Max-Pack keeps the towing job and the measured tow ledger. The R2 is the lighter, more nimble rig for camping and off-road, the one we take when the trailer stays home.

What is Launch Green on the Rivian R2?

Launch Green is a special-edition exterior color offered only on launch vehicles, the first R2s off the line. Those launch builds also come with some added accessories and lifetime autonomy, Rivian's driver-assistance features for the life of the vehicle. Ours is a deep olive green paired with the 20-inch all-terrain wheels, the look and stance we wanted for getting off pavement.

How do I order a Rivian R2?

If a Rivian is already in your future, ordering through our referral link passes the current Rivian referral perk to you and sends a credit back to the rig that runs this whole site. It costs you nothing extra.
